Artist Biography
American bass-baritone Andrew Allan Hiers is a classically trained singing actor hailed for his “mature musicianship and superb comic gifts” with an ability to sing “with ease and warmth.” (Parterre Box). Possessing a uniquely extensive vocal range with a sonorous and vibrant vocal timbre, Mr. Hiers brings a compelling vocal color and dynamic stage presence to each and every role he undertakes. As a performer of the modern era, he is a brand ambassador who maintains an active social media presence with several viral post which has garnered him over 15,000 followers between Instagram and TikTok and growing through daily posting.
He most recently performed Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni) with the Cleveland Institue of Music, a role he has performed several times, previously with Vero Beach Opera and the Vienna Summer Music Festival. His statuesque physicality, combined with a considerable lower vocal extension, gives him the flexibility to perform roles usually reserved for basses such as Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) which he recently performed with St. Pete Opera. His talent for comedy has led to him being cast as a basso buffo in such roles as Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola) with the Merola Opera Program, Leporello (Don Giovanni) with NY Opera Exchange, Mustafá (L’italiana in Algeri) with St. Pete Opera, and Don Basilio and Don Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Northern Lights Music Festival and Gulf Coast Symphony respectively.
Hiers also boasts an impressive upper vocal extension which features several roles in the baritone repertoire including the title roles of Gianni Schicchi and Falstaff which he covered twice while performing Pistola at Opera Colorado and Opera San Josè before finally debuting the lead role with Eklund Opera at Colorado University Boulder. With professional musical theater experience as Arab (concert version of West Side Story) with Opera Naples and Judge Turpin (Sweeney Todd) with Tri-Cities Opera he possesses a versatility second to none.
Last summer he had the privilege of premiering the role of Donaldo in Anna di Resburgo by Carolina Uccelli to modern audiences while covering the lead baritone role of Norcesto, making his Lincoln Center debut with Teatro Nuovo in the Rose Theater of Jazz at Lincoln Center. It was the opera’s first performance since it premiered in 1835, even more significant as it was the only opera by a female composer to be performed at a major opera house during the bel canto era. Opera Today noted “Andrew Allan Hiers deployed a deep bass in the role of Donaldo di Solis.”
Other notable roles include Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta) and Alidoro (La Cenerentola) with Pacific Opera Project, Benoit/Alcindoro (La bohème) and Frank (Die Fledermaus) with Gulfshore Opera, Zuniga (Carmen), Count Capulet (Roméo et Juliette), and Doctor Grenvil (La traviata) with Opera Naples, Sacristan (Tosca) and Hortensius (La fille du régiment) with St. Pete Opera, Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte) with Opera Orlando in addition to the title roles in Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Upper West, and Don Pasquale with Venture Opera.
