Singing Actor Andrew Allan Hiers

Is a classically trained bass-baritone hailed for his “mature musicianship and superb comic gifts” (SF Gate) with an ability to sing “with ease and warmth.” (Parterre Box) Possessing a versatile vocal range with a dark, vibrant vocal timbre, Mr. Hiers brings a unique color and dynamic stage presence to each and every performance he undertakes.

The 2022-23 season commenced with his return to the St. Petersburg Opera Company as Sacristan in Tosca where he made his company debut last season as Hortensius in La fille du régiment. His comedic performance as Hortensius garnered a nomination for Best Male Performance in a Supporting Role of a Musical/Opera for the Theatre Tampa Bay Awards.

As an alumnus of the Merola Opera Program and Opera Colorado, Mr. Hiers is no stranger to leading roles and big stages. His time in San Francisco with Merola culminated in a well received debut as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, “Bass-baritone Andrew Allan Hiers delivered an impeccable performance as Don Magnifico, creating a full-throated comic character of breathless patter and theatrical wit without sacrificing any of the score’s musical specifics.” (SF Gate)

Upon completion of his successful summer at Merola, Mr. Hiers concluded his young artist training with Opera Colorado as a member of their Resident Artist Program. His time in Denver featured performances of Benoit in La bohème, Pistola in Falstaff, and was highlighted by a student matinee performance as the title role of Falstaff. At the conclusion of the year-long residency he was selected as the recipient of the Harold Norblom Award, given in recognition of exceptional dedication and artistic growth as a Resident Artist.

A native Floridian, Mr. Hiers is proud to work prominently in the Sunshine State including Gulfshore Opera with which he most recently appeared as Sacristan in Tosca, Frank in The Bat’s Revenge (Die Fledermaus), and Benoit/Alcindoro in La bohème. Prior to that he appeared as Benoit in La bohème with Vero Beach Opera, for which he was a finalist in their “Rising Stars of Opera” Competition.

Mr. Hiers makes his company debut with Opera Orlando this season as Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte. A fixture on the Opera Naples stage, he has appeared recently as Doctor Grenvil in La traviata, Arab in a concert version of West Side Story, and the Customs Officer in La bohème.

Outside of Florida he has appeared multiple times in Los Angeles with Pacific Opera Project as Ibn-Hakia in Iolanta and Alidoro in La Cenerentola. His portrayal of the stoic healer Ibn-Hakia received a nomination for Best Opera Singer in the SF Classical Voice Audience Choice Awards for Los Angeles. Under the direction of company founder and director Josh Shaw Iolanta won an Audience Choice Award for Best Opera Performance.

Over the last decade he’s been a mainstay with the Northern Lights Music Festival in the Iron Range of northern Minnesota including performances as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Cascada in The Merry Widow, Zuniga in Carmen, and Colline in La bohème. His most recent summer was featured in the PBS documentary “Iron Opera” currently available on YouTube.

Other featured role highlights include Dr. Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Blitch in Susannah, Don Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, as well as the title roles of Falstaff, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale and Gianni Schicchi.

Mr. Hiers is a graduate of Florida State University where he studied with David Okerlund and SUNY Binghamton where he studied with Thomas Goodheart. After graduating from FSU he was accepted into Sarasota Opera’s Apprentice Artist Program. He has also studied with renowned Miami-based voice teacher Manny Perez and most recently the voice teacher popularly known on Instagram as HausofShmizzay.
